NLEX busy rehabilitating bridges in Pampanga

If you’re planning to pass through the North Luzon Expressway or Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) one of these days, be prepared to encounter heavy traffic.

NLEX Corporation is currently upgrading several bridges in both expressways. These include the San Matias Bridge in Sto. Tomas, Pampanga in NLEX, and the Pasig-Portero Bridge that connects Clark, Pampanga with Subic, Zambales in SCTEX.

“Just like the other bridges along the NLEX-SCTEX network, San Matias and Pasig-Potrero are essential in facilitating ease of travel and efficient delivery of commodities. We are doing the necessary repairs as part of our commitment to keep our assets in good condition and more importantly, provide motorists with a safe and smooth expressway experience,” said J. Luigi L. Bautista, president and general manager of NLEX Corporation.

The 80-meter San Matias Bridge is located between the San Fernando and San Simon interchanges. Here, the two link slabs along the southbound portion that connect the bridge deck spans are being replaced to improve safety. The upgrades are expected to enhance the bridge’s support and deck surface.

NLEX says the plan is to complete it within one month and will require occasional lane closures. Like the northbound Candaba viaduct rehabilitation, the project will involve the use of a Bailey Bridge to allow Class 1 and Class 2 vehicles to cross the link slab repair site. A counterflow lane will also be open at the northbound lane to accommodate Class 3 vehicles and big trucks.

The 720-meter Pasig-Portero Bridge, which serves as a vital link between Subic and Clark, is being strengthened as the sand surrounding the piers has diminished due to quarrying operations. Sheet piles and gabions are being installed to improve the bridge’s serviceability and protect its structure. NLEX Corporation the project is expected to be completed within Q2 of this year.

Apart from the said bridges, the corporation is also continuously rehabilitating the 5-km Candaba Viaduct. At present, the girders and slabs are being upgraded to further ensure safety.

With the bridge works currently ongoing, NLEX Corp. is asking motorists to have a bit more patience and understanding while they repair the two bridges.
