Nissan Sylphy plugs into the future with e-Power

It could be said that Nissan's e-Power technology is a game-changer. That's because it's not like most hybrid drive systems. Instead of battery power assisting the engine, it's the latter that keeps it charged. That means it relies more on electric power than fuel.

So far, Nissan has fitted it to a subcompact hatchback (Note), a similarly-sized crossover (Kicks), and even a van (Serena). However, they have yet to apply this clever piece of technology to a sedan until now.

Even though Nissan is cutting back on a few sedans, they are still open to improving them. They have done so by giving the all-new Sylphy (Sentra in other markets) the e-Power hybrid system. Nissan announced that the compact sedan will get the aforementioned technology a few months ago, but did not release specs or photos.

However, a few photos of the car have surfaced online recently, and it follows the standard e-Power formula, at least in terms of design. From the outside, it looks like a standard Sylphy, but that is what Nissan is going for in the first place. If you take a look at other e-Power models from the company, Nissan does little to differentiate these hybrid models from the gas-fed versions.

With that, we know what the car looks like, but what about its performance stats? Nissan has yet to release them, but it is likely the Sylphy e-Power will have the same system as the ones found in the Note, Kicks, and Serena. That means the Sylphy e-Power might have a 1.2-liter engine with 82 PS and 110 Nm of torque.

While it doesn't sound particularly powerful, the engine's role is to assist the electric motor. Instead, it relies on the electric motor that makes 136 PS and 320 Nm of torque. Given that Nissan didn't change the output for other models, there is a good chance those will be the figures of the Sylphy e-Power as well.

For now, it appears that the Sylphy e-Power will be offered in China first. There is currently no word regarding export plans. But either way, Nissan is keen on expanding its electric car portfolio around the world. More recently, Nissan began offering the LEAF in the Philippines and that might serve as the opening for e-Power models in the country.
