Next-gen Mercedes-AMG C63 debuts Sept 21, drops V8
From having powerful V8s, next-gen Mercedes-AMG C63 to embrace electrification for added performance

If there's one clear trend that automakers are currently riding on right now, it's the race to electrify their lineup. From fully-electric vehicles (EVs) to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), companies are looking to make their vehicles more eco-friendly and produce as little or no emissions.
Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to this as they've unveiled several EVs and hybrid vehicles over the past years. Even their performance division Mercedes-AMG has also revealed several high-performance vehicles that actually emit fewer emissions. And come September 21, 2022, Mercedes-AMG will be revealing the all-new C63.
Revered by enthusiasts for its V8 engine, the C63 built itself a reputation for delivering sports car-like performance while still fulfilling its role as a luxury sedan. But for the next-generation model, don't expect to find a V8 under the hood.
Instead, the all-new four-door sedan will be powered by a four-cylinder that will be helped along by a rear-mounted electric motor. That's right, the new Mercedes-AMG C63 will be dropping its V8 engine for an electrified turbocharged inline-four. Not only that, but instead of just being a rear-wheel drive sedan, the all-new C63 will be an all-wheel drive vehicle.
The exact details and specifications for the next-generation C63 are not yet available in full. However, AMG has mentioned that its powertrain will consist of the 2.0-liter M139 turbo inline-four derived from the Mercedes-AMG SL43, CLA 45, A45, and GLA 45 models. Not only will it be more powerful, but it will be mounted longitudinally like the previous generation C63. The rear-mounted electric motor, meanwhile, will get its power from a 6.1-kWh battery pack that will drive the rear wheels – hence its AWD capability.
Once revealed, the electrified sedan will reportedly have a combined system output of 670 PS which gives it an extra 160 horsepower over the outgoing C63 S from the W205 generation. This means the plug-in hybrid C63 (yes, it's a PHEV) will be faster than its predecessors. But with the added weight of the battery pack and other powertrain systems, we'll be curious about its overall weight.
With its global launch to happen very soon, we'll be waiting in earnest to know just how quick and powerful will the all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 will be.
