Next-gen Hyundai vehicles to rely on software updates by 2025

Hyundai Motor Group has made it clear – all their vehicles will soon have their performance and functionality kept up to date through Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. Yes, you read that right. We're still on the subject of cars, not smartphones.

The Korean manufacturer is transforming its models into Software Defined Vehicles (SDV), giving customers the freedom to remotely upgrade the performance and choose which functions they want for their vehicles at any given time through the Connected Car Services (CCS) platform.

Basically, this strategy can be somewhat likened to electronic devices like smartphones, which will continue to receive updates throughout the vehicle's lifespan. Furthermore, this also removes the need to go to a Hyundai dealership to have the car's safety, security, and driving performance updated from time to time.

Presented in the "Unlock the Software Age" global forum, Hyundai announced all their newly-launched vehicles will be equipped with this function. This means, the transformation also applies to the Korean brand's current internal combustion engine vehicles.

Function enhancements on advanced driver assistance systems, plus other vehicle features can be personalized through the automaker's Feature-on-Demand service, allowing customers the ability to remove and subscribe to vehicle functions based on their needs.

“By transforming all vehicles to Software Defined Vehicles by 2025, Hyundai Motor Group will completely redefine the concept of the automobile and take the lead in ushering in a never-before-experienced era of mobility,” said Chung Kook Park, president, and Head of the R&D Division of Hyundai Motor Group.

By 2025, Hyundai expects around 20 million vehicles to receive Connected Car Services worldwide.
