MMDA opens free shower rooms for bike-to-work commuters

Diesel pump prices are expected to breach the PHP 100-per-liter mark this week, driven largely by the ongoing US-led conflict in the Middle East. With fuel costs ridiculously high, many Filipinos are likely to look for ways to ease the strain on their daily expenses.

Some may limit the use of their vehicles, while others could turn to public transportation or switch to more fuel-efficient scooters. Then, there are also those who may opt to cut fuel spending entirely by commuting on bicycles.

However, this shift comes with its own challenges. Not all workplaces are equipped with shower facilities, which is an important consideration for employees who choose to bike to work, especially in the country’s warm and humid climate.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has a solution: build a public shower room for those who need it, especially bike commuters.

The MMDA recently inaugurated its Bike-to-Work End-of-Trip (EoT) facilities at the Motorcycle Riding Academy (MRA) in Pasig City, which says a lot about its push for active transport and sustainable mobility across Metro Manila. The initiative also reflects the agency’s leadership direction, with General Manager and former PNP Chief Nicolas Torre III, himself a bike commuter.

The MMDA said it will continue rolling out similar facilities across Metro Manila to support bicycle commuters, particularly those traveling to work and offices. During the inauguration, Torre said the initiative aims to protect cyclists' welfare.

He also described the project as a concrete step toward building a more bike-friendly metropolis, adding that the pilot facility serves as a proof of concept aligned with the agency’s long-term vision of promoting sustainable and inclusive transport systems.

In the meantime, the facilities are open only during certain hours, but the MMDA says it is considering operating the facilities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to better serve and accommodate more cyclists. Currently, about 1,700 cyclists use the EDSA bike lane daily. For security and monitoring purposes, users must register upon entry to gain free access to the facilities.
