MMDA: No decision yet on new coding scheme

Back in March, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) presented plans to address Metro Manila traffic, one of which was the proposal of a new number coding policy that would supposedly reduce traffic volume by as much as 50%.

As the days went by, modified photos of the said coding scheme circulated around social media, saying that the new policy will be in effect this month with varying dates of implementation. Some had a May 1 effective date written on them, and some had May 15. That of course sparked confusion among motorists and the riding public.

To set the record straight, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes has announced the revamped number coding scheme is yet to be decided by the Metro Manila Council (MMC).

The MMC is composed of Metro Manila mayors. And in a televised interview on NET25 yesterday, Artes said the pending decision regarding the modified coding scheme was because of the MMC requesting additional data that the MMDA will provide “in the coming days or weeks”.

As such, the 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Metro Manila coding scheme will remain in effect until further notice, with the exception, of course, of the Republic of Makati which has a 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM number coding scheme.
