MMC approves exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth

Motorists who frequently take Commonwealth Avenue heads up. The Metro Manila Council (MMC) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have recently agreed in principle to put up dedicated lanes for motorcycles as well as public utility vehicles (PUVs) along the major roadway in Quezon City.

The MMC, which is composed of 17 Metro Manila mayors, gave the go-ahead for the establishment of exclusive lanes for riders and motorists in order to reduce accidents. Based on data from the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, there were a total of 1,010 fatal, non-fatal, and damage-to-property accidents involving motorcycles along Commonwealth Avenue (2022 data not revealed yet by the MMDA).

Under MMDA Resolution No. 22-15, the right outermost lane of Commonwealth Avenue will be designated as an exclusive bicycle lane. Meanwhile, the second lane and third lane of the same avenue will be for PUVs (jeeps, UV Express vans, buses) and motorcycles, respectively. The other remaining lanes can be utilized by all other motor vehicles.

The exclusive motorcycle lane along Commonwealth Avenue will be put up pending the adjustments that the Quezon City LGU will recommend. The MMDA, in coordination with the DPWH and Quezon City LGU, will install appropriate traffic signs and apply the proper lane markings along the aforementioned roadway from Elliptical Road to Doña Carmen Subdivision and vice versa. That way, it will serve as a guide to motorists and mark out each lane from one another.

“The exclusive motorcycle lanes located at the third lane from the right along Commonwealth will depend upon the road conditions as the road has some inconsistencies in terms of lane width due to different construction projects,” said MMDA Acting Chairman Carlo Dimayuga III.
