MG4 Electric is the Mulan EV for Europe

With gas and diesel prices going up, electric vehicles are becoming more tempting to the local market. As previously reported, MG has a little EV and they unveiled it to the Chinese market. Hot on the heels of their Chinese counterparts (MG’s mother company is SAIC), they have now revealed the electric hatch for the EU.

Dubbed the MG4 for the European market, the brand enters the C-segment EV SUV market. The new EV is being marketing as the smart choice for motorists who have embraced the electric lifestyle. The MG4 will be based on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) for battery-powered vehicles as developed by MG and SAIC. The EV is currently undergoing a final 120,000 km endurance test under various conditions in the EU. 

The platform utilizes the One Pack magic battery system. The system offers ultra-high integration and ultra-long life. It also has zero thermal runaway for safety protection. With the new battery design, the EV benefits from more interior space within the same exterior dimensions. With that feature and further weight reduction, the EV will become more efficient and have better handling. Did we mention that customers can swap out batteries? Drivers can replace and upgrade the battery when a longer range is needed. 

The MG4 electric is 4287 mm long, 1836 wide, and 1504 tall. Like the Mulan, the 5-door hatchback’s 50:50 weight distribution allows better handling, more direct steering movements, and fast cornering. Being rear-wheeled, the sleek and sporty electric hatch can do some spirited driving with a family of five. There are also plans for an AWD version in the near future. 

The standard batteries for the EV will be the 51 and 64 kWh variants. These are expected to give ranges of 350 and 450 kilometers respectively. MG will offer a bigger capacity 150 kWh battery variant which will raise the range dramatically. The electric hatch was clocked going 0-100 in 8 seconds while the top speed is set at 160 km/h.

The significant savings from shifting to electric from petrol is obvious. The MG4 electric is expected to launch in the EU in the fourth quarter of this year. If MG decides to bring the MG4 electric aka Mulan to our local market and price it right, this would go up against the likes of the Nissan Leaf. Hopefully, by then, the country has already put up a sizable infrastructure that can support EVs in some measure.
