Mercedes-Benz slightly tweaks GLS flagship SUV for 2024

The Mercedes-Benz GLS represents the best of what Stuttgart can offer in the SUV class. If Land Rover has the Range Rover, and if BMW has the X7, then Mercedes-Benz has the GLS.

It's been four years since the current second-generation GLS was launched, which is why Mercedes-Benz decided to give its flagship SUV some slight nip and tuck across its whole model range for the 2024 model year.

Starting with the standard GLS, the SUV has adopted Mercedes-Benz's updated corporate look. First seen in the smaller GLA and GLB crossovers, the GLS has its lower bumper intakes surrounded with high gloss black which reminds us of swimming goggles and Oakley sunglasses from the early 2000s. Furthermore, the four horizontal bars in the grille now have a Silver Shadow finish, contrasting the Silver Arrow badge that houses the vehicle's front ADAS sensors.

At the back, the GLS has a new light signature and slightly smoked lenses in its LED taillights. From a border-style illumination, the taillights now light up with three horizontal blocks.

Inside, Mercedes-Benz did not change the layout of the GLS' opulent interior. But what they updated was the SUV's infotainment system, putting in the latest MBUX software that has a new look for the displays, and adds special content such as an inclinometer, compass, and steering angle when switched to off-road driving mode.

Also, there are new upholstery options for better customer personalization in the GLS. Mercedes-Benz added Catalana Beige and Bahia Brown leather, along with trim choices such as High-Gloss Brown Linden Wood and Manufaktur Piano Lacquer Flowing Lines.

In terms of powertrain options, the GLS for 2024 gets a dose of electrification across its model range. The diesel-powered GLS350d 4MATIC, GLS450d 4MATIC, as well as the gas-fed GLS450 4MATIC and GLS580 4Matic get a 48-volt mild hybrid assist, giving the whole lineup a slight power and torque boost.

On the other hand, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 gets some tiny upgrades of its own. Exterior updates include an ambient lighting system with the animated projection of the Mercedes-Maybach logo, as well as new and optional 23-inch forged wheels. Inside, the seat upholstery now has a diamond pattern quilting with specific perforations.

The GLS600 now puts out 557 PS and 730 Nm of torque from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 unit thanks to a 48-volt mild hybrid assist.

Lastly, the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 likewise gets some minor updates. Like the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600, the AMG GLS63 gains light projectors outside but comes with its own AMG-specific illumination. AMG updated the software of its electronically-controlled suspension, adjusting the roll stabilization and behavior of its air suspension. The sporty model also now comes standard with a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, plus adaptive high beams.

The AMG GLS63 puts out 612 PS and 850 Nm of torque from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and benefits from a 48-volt ISG that adds 22 PS and 250 Nm to its output. Power is variably distributed to all four wheels via a 9-speed AMG Speedshift Twin Clutch Transmission.

Mercedes-Benz says the updated GLS will arrive in European dealerships by October this year, while the SUV will be launched in the USA by mid-September. With those major markets getting the GLS later this year, we could expect the updated model to be introduced to the Philippines by 2024.
