Mercedes-AMG EQE charges in with 687 HP, 1000 Nm torque

Mercedes-Benz wants to show that electric vehicles don’t have to be slow or boring with its electric AMG lineup. The automaker previously introduced the Mercedes-AMG EQS, and it’s now expanding the lineup with the new EQE 43 and EQE 53.

The new Mercedes-AMG EQE builds on the mid-size electric sedan launched last year. Although the new EQE 43 and 53 models don't have the V8 of older AMG models, they still pack quite a heavy punch. The “entry” level EQE 43 comes with a pair of electric motors that produce a combined output of 476 horsepower (350 kW) and 858 Nm of torque. It’s enough to propel the sedan from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

The EQE 53 uses the same dual-motor layout as the 43, but AMG-modified electric motors produce up to 687 horsepower (505 kW) and 1000 Nm torque with the AMG Dynamic Plus package. As a result, it accelerates even faster, going from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.3 seconds and reaching an electronically limited top speed of 240 km/h.

Both AMG EQE models use a 90.6-kWh battery pack and come standard with the brand’s signature 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Mercedes says range the AMG EQE has a range of around 462 to 533 km, considerably less than the standard model.  

To match the increased power, the German marque also improved handling by fitting it with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive adjustable damping. The upgrades work with AMG Dynamic Select and adjust ride height depending on the selected mode. Larger AMG brakes help bring the EV to a stop.

Styling-wise, the AMG EQE looks nearly identical to the standard model. The most obvious design giveaway would be Panamerican-style grille and AMG badging. The EV also comes with a black front splitter, more aggressive bumper vents, a rear diffuser, a trunk spoiler, and new wheels.

Step inside and it’s very identical to the standard EQE with the Hyperscreen still dominating the dashboard. The main difference is the addition of AMG-specific functions in the MBUX system, AMG sports seats, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Owners can also spec the cabin with contrast red trim for a sportier vibe.

The EQE won’t be the last EV to come from Mercedes-AMG. In fact, expect most, if not all future AMG models to drop the V8 motor for battery power.
