LTO orders 15 million plates to address motorcycle, vehicle backlog

Have you been waiting for your vehicle or motorcycle license plate? Well, if it is not on the way, it may come in the next batches processed by the LTO (Land Transportation Office).

To address the 13.2 million (motorcycle) and 179,000 (motor vehicle) license plate shortage, the DOTr (Department of Transportation) placed an order for an additional 15 million metal plates. The LTO will receive it every month.

“The delivery has already started. With this, we expect to address the backlog for both motor vehicles and motorcycles on a monthly basis,” said LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II.

With this new set of metal plates, the LTO hopes that all license plate backlogs will be addressed by 2024.

“Humahabol na tayo kase bumibilis na po ‘yung delivery ng plates ‘no to the tune of 250,000 pairs every month for the motor vehicle and one million every month for the motorcycle

[We are catching up because the delivery of plates is accelerating to the tune of 250,000 pairs every month for motor vehicles and one million per month for motorcycles],” added Mendoza.

The LTO uses various equipment to make motorcycle and vehicle plates. It has 2 IDeROBOTs – one capable of producing 700 vehicle plates an hour or 5,600 plates in an 8-hour shift and another making 3,600 motorcycle plates over an 8-hour shift. It is complemented by seven manual embossing machines capable of producing 22,000 plates per day and an automated embossing machine rated to make 12,000 plates per day.
