Lexus gives us a better look at RZ electric crossover

Back in December, Lexus gave us a first look at the all-new electric RZ crossover. Essentially a more luxurious version of the Toyota bZ4X (and the Subaru Solterra), the RZ will serve as the brand’s first dedicated electric vehicle (EV).

At the time, we only saw the RZ’s stylish front end, which slightly resembles the Lexus RX. However, we have yet to see more of the RZ’s rear and sleek side profile. That all changes today after the automaker released more photos of the soon-to-be-launched RZ 450e.

Right off the bat, we immediately noticed that Lexus took the time to redesign the RZ’s rear. Instead of sharing the same taillights as the bZ4X, Lexus installed its very own full-width LED taillights, which are slimmer in design. The RZ also comes with a different roof spoiler, a tweaked tailgate, and restyled rear bumper.

While others might say that the side profile is a clear copy of the bZ4X, Lexus also made sure that the RZ 450e is not just a re-skinned Toyota. Whereas the bZ4X has a painted C-pillar, the one on the Lexus is painted black to give it a sleeker appearance. Last but not least, the body cladding on the RZ is more subtle compared to the bZ4X’s which looks more rugged. 

The exact powertrain details for the RZ are not yet available. Since it uses the same e-TNGA platform as the bZ4X, we won’t be surprised if it will have similar drivetrain options.

For reference, the Toyota will be available with two versions at launch; 2WD and 4WD. The former has a single electric motor mounted at the front axle and has a peak output of 201 PS (150 kW) and 265 Nm of torque. It can go from 0 - 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h.

Meanwhile, the 4WD version comes with two electric motors - one on each axle of the vehicle. It has a combined output rating of 215 PS (160 kW) along with 336 Nm of torque. 0 - 100 km/h is easily dispatched at 7.7 seconds while the top speed remains unchanged.

Both the 4WD and 2WD versions of the bZ4X benefit from a 71.4 kWh battery pack which translates to 450 km of range based on the WLTP cycle. Should the Lexus RZ have a similar setup, it could also come with the same power outputs and range.

With Lexus looking to sell only EVs by 2035, the RZ 450e will play a big role in a cleaner and zero-emissions future. Expect more dedicated electric models to be revealed by Lexus in the coming years.
