KG Mobility, the former SsangYong, ties up with Chery to build SUVs
First product under KGM-Chery collaboration could come out as early as 2026

It’s been a while since we last heard from KG Mobility. The brand formerly known as SsangYong had its brand launch under TCCCI about two years ago, but since then, both the local and the parent company in Korea seem to be working under the radar.
Now we’ve found out what they are currently working on. KG Mobility has announced a partnership with Chery Automobile to jointly develop a large SUV along with next-generation vehicle technologies.
Chery and KGM had a signing ceremony at Wuhu recently, where KG Mobility Chairman Kwak Jae-sun, CEO Hwang Ki-young, along with Chery Chair Yin Tongyue and President Zhang Guibing, were present.
The backdrop of the signing ceremony indicates the two companies are working on project SE-10. According to reports, this could be a large SUV that’s based on KGM’s flagship model, the Rexton. Furthermore, the large SUV project’s development could be completed as early as 2026.
Apart from the SUV project, the partnership will see both brands collaborating on mobility technologies such as software-defined vehicles, autonomous driving, and components designed for electric mobility. This broadens the tie-up between the two companies as they previously agreed to collaborate on the development and sharing of Chery’s plug-in hybrid platform.
In addition to Chery, KG Mobility is also currently tapping BYD for help in securing lithium-ion battery supplies for the Korando EV and Musso EV pickup truck.
