Jeep's latest 7-seat SUV is called the Meridian

Jeep may be late to the 7-seat SUV segment, but the automaker is making sure they have plenty of three-row SUVs in various segments.

From the uber-luxurious Grand Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee L, and the Grand Commander that was (quietly) launched in the country last year, Jeep understands the appeal of having three rows of seats.

In the future, Jeep’s lineup of three-row SUVs will expand to include the all-new Meridian. Set to debut in India, the 2023 Meridian will reportedly be available with six or seven seats and will take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner.

Jeep has yet to reveal the all-new Meridian in full, but the automaker did release a teaser video of the upcoming SUV. Named after the Meridian 77 road that runs through the entire country, Jeep showcased a prototype model that traveled all the way from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

This was no easy feat as the journey is 3,250 km long and takes over 50 hours to complete. Along the way, the automaker demonstrated the Meridian's capability by driving the upcoming SUV over various terrains, including the Indian wilderness.

Despite the special livery hiding most of the SUV’s details, it’s clear that the 2023 Meridian will be based on the all-new Commander recently launched in South America. From its distinct shape, signature seven-slot grille, LED headlights, and wraparound LED taillights, we won’t be surprised if the Meridian will look identical to its South American counterpart. Perhaps the only differences it will have is the front and rear bumper design.

Interior pictures of the 2023 Meridian have yet to be revealed. But assuming the vehicle is based on the Commander, it could have a similar cabin layout. Features such as a 10.1-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto could also be available on the all-new Meridian.

As for powertrains, the Meridian will reportedly be powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine that puts out 200 PS. It will then be connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive capability.

With the launch of the all-new Meridian expected in the coming weeks or months, we cannot wait to see if India’s latest Jeep will look like the Commander from South America.
