Japan's Defender: Lexus reveals all-new 2024 GX SUV

One thing is for sure. The Lexus GX is no longer a Prada-wearing Prado.

Lexus has finally unveiled the all-new GX – the first in over a decade. Reimagined from the ground up, the all-new GX now shares the TNGA-F platform with its bigger brother, the LX, and the Toyota Land Cruiser 300.

With an emphasis on being a “Premium Off-Roader”, the all-new Lexus GX looks the part. It stands more upright with an angular body and chiseled lines for that rugged look. The Lexus spindle grille has lost its chrome bits, but it's still nicely integrated into the styling.

This also marks the first time Lexus is offering the GX with the Overtrail variant designed for off-road duty. The Overtrail comes with a two-tone paint job, black fender accents, an aluminum skid plate, plus 18-inch wheels on 33-inch tires.

While the exterior was made more rugged, engineers still retained the signature Lexus luxury inside the all-new GX. The upholstery features premium semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe synthetic leather, plus there's a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment display that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Seating in the all-new GX comes in two configurations – the usual seven-person layout and a six-seater layout with captain's chairs in the second row. The front seats are heated and ventilated while the second row has heating as an option.

Lexus says the all-new GX will come with two powertrain options – a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 with 349 PS and 650 Nm of torque paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The former is being offered at launch, while the variant with a 2.4-liter inline-4 turbo hybrid will come at a later date.

As for its drivetrain, the all-new GX has a full-time 4WD with an electronic transfer case. It comes standard with a Torsen limited-slip center differential with a locking feature, while the Overtrail variant gets an added electronic locking rear diff for maximum traction, along with Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor systems.

In terms of safety, the all-new GX gets standard Lexus Safety System 3.0, giving the SUV a comprehensive suite of active safety equipment such as a Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Road Sign Assist (RSA) and Proactive Driving Assist (PDA).

Like the LX and the LC300, the all-new GX will be assembled at the Tahara plant in Japan and is expected to go on sale in early 2024.
