Is Foxconn set to build EVs for Mitsubishi?

Last week, we reported that electronics manufacturer giant Foxconn is set to design and build electric vehicles (EVs) for two Japanese automakers. That’s right, the company that makes the iPhone will soon be building EVs on a massive scale. So far, the company has yet to say which company they will be working with although they have already expressed interest in working with Nissan.

Now, new reports have come out and it looks like Mitsubishi will be one of the Japanese brands Foxconn will work with. In a report by Nikkei Asia, Foxconn has supposedly been in talks with Mitsubishi for over 6 months. Since Foxconn wants to branch out from making consumer electronics, they plan to branch out towards EVs and are looking to gain a 5% share of the global EV market by 2025.

This is where Foxconn’s possible deal with Mitsubishi comes into play. The Japanese automaker already makes plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models for the Outlander and the Renault-based ASX. But they lack dedicated battery EVs which could be filled by Foxconn. Should the deal come together, Foxconn could attract more established automakers who wish to procure their services for making EVs.

Foxconn Model C

There are no specifics yet about the Foxconn-Mitsubishi EV deal. However, we cannot help but think of the possible cars Foxconn could build for Mitsubishi and the other mystery Japanese automaker. Foxconn already has a plethora of models that cover various vehicle segments. One of these is the Model V (see main image above), an all-electric pickup truck that has a payload capacity of 1 ton and can tow up to 3 tons. The double-cab pickup can seat a total of five individuals and comes with intelligent sensors all around while retaining its ability to cover any terrain and do the rough stuff.

There’s also the Model C which is set to be sold in the US market soon. It has a drag coefficient of 0.28 cd, can go from 0 - 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and has a range of up to 700 km. The Model is a compact electric crossover that could suit Mitsubishi’s need for an electric crossover. Last but not least is the Model B which is a subcompact EV crossover that’s equally stylish and packed to the brim with features.

With Foxconn serious about its EV plans, it’s no wonder two Japanese automakers are in talks with the Taiwan-based electronics giant. The only question now is, will Mitsubishi eventually strike a deal with Foxconn in the future?
