Hyundai to announce N Vision 74 production plans this month

Last year, Hyundai teased us with the DeLorean-type N Vision 74 Concept that has Back to the Future fans waxing nostalgic and have auto enthusiasts excited because it looked like the Korean automaker’s pony car from the mid-70s.

The award-winning design of the N Vision 74 Concept comes from 84-year-old Giorgetto Giugiaro, an Italian automotive artist who was named the Car Designer of the Century in 1999 and was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002. Hyundai unveiled it at the 2022 Turin Motor Show, the same venue where the Pony debuted in 1974.

Reports from Korea say Hyundai is organizing ‘Pony Day’ on May 27 at its design studio in Seoul, where the media and other attendees will get more details, the final design, and maybe even the initial specs of the N Vision 74. So far, no other articles or news items have confirmed whether or not Pony Day will happen two weeks from now. Once we do get more information, we will surely put out an update.

But if Pony pushes through, it raises more questions than answers. What kind of powertrain will it have, and how far will its actual design be from the concept version? The N Vision 74 shown at the Turin Motor Show was a unique hybrid vehicle with a hydrogen fuel cell and a 62.4-kWh battery pack. It used two motors at the rear with a combined output of 671 HP and 900 Nm of torque that can send the vehicle from 0-60 miles per hour in four seconds, all the way to a top speed of over 250 km/h. The maximum range is 600 kilometers.

The production-spec Hyundai N Vision 74 may have more subtle styling than the concept, but it could have a front motor for higher performance and better handling.

Speculating and second-guessing what other fun stuff Hyundai puts into the final version of the N Vision 74 is fun because everything is still up in the air until Pony Day is confirmed on May 27. For now, it is a wait-and-see affair.
