Hyundai, Rolls Royce partner for a zero emission aviation industry
Hyundai and Rolls Royce join forces to start the modernization of the aviation industry and hit their zero-emission 2050 mandate

Hyundai and Rolls Royce are planning to take you to the skies. The two companies have partnered on a project that will work on all-electric propulsion and hydrogen fuel technology for the Advanced Air Mobility market. Enter Supernal.

The partnership was formalized at the Supernal booth at the Farnborough Airshow. With both companies leading the way in the AAM market, they look to modernize the space and innovate new technologies, especially in the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Regional Air Mobility (RAM) industries while also advancing sustainable aviation. Hyundai also partnered with tech group Safran to assist in the development of more propulsion, defense, and space technologies needed by the project.

With a joint goal of delivering a working aircraft powered by an electric fuel cell by 2025, both companies aim to bring their expertise in the fields. Hyundai will bring their knowledge and experience in hydrogen fuel cells and electric propulsion engines while Rolls Royce bring their knowledge in aviation as a whole. Both companies have recently progressed in the electrification of both their vehicle lineup and are looking to use their experience from that to guide their partnership.

As we mentioned before, Hyundai is pushing for hydrogen fuel-cell powered cars but, most of its investors wanted the company to focus on electric power for that industry. With the Rolls Royce partnership in play, Hyundai will be getting its wish to develop the hydrogen fuel cell more. They also believe that with the support of the aviation industry, they will achieve the 2050 mandate of zero-emission aircraft models.

With both parties, mapping out a plan to achieve its goals, the partnership says that the benefits of using the newer technologies would be zero-emission, silent flight, and a more reliable onboard power source that enables scalability and may even provide a longer range when it comes to flight. Both companies have shared the deal and are hoping that the project bears fruit and maybe even push the aircraft they’re gonna be developing beyond the stratosphere and into space. One can only dream that day comes.
