Hyundai PH gets approval for 1.6L engine, is it for Sante Fe Hybrid?

Earlier this year, Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc (HMPH) launched the latest generation Santa Fe. Trading smooth curves for a boxier shape, the vastly redesigned midsize crossover SUV is both a head-turner and a technological powerhouse with its wide array of features. Not only that, but it's available with either a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated inline-four pushing over 190 PS or a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 281 PS.

Combined with a multitude of smart driver aids and cabin amenities, the Santa Fe is looking to be a best-seller for those who want a feature-packed midsize crossover SUV that also looks good from every angle. However, there was one thing missing from the all-new Santa Fe when Hyundai launched it back in March, a hybrid variant.

Back before the holidays last year when the automaker first previewed the fifth generation Santa Fe, Hyundai said that aside from having a pair of 2.5-liter engines available, they mentioned that it will be joined by a hybrid version at a later date. So far, there have been no updates yet regarding the electrified Santa Fe.

Fortunately, we were able to get new information about the Santa Fe Hybrid's possible powertrain. Recently, Hyundai was given regulatory approval for a new passenger vehicle powered by a 1598cc engine which translates to a 1.6-liter unit. With a reference weight of around 2090 kg, this particular Hyundai has quite the heft to it.

After doing some research and checking the numbers, it looks like the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid's powertrain for the Philippines will be a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four that's assisted by an electric motor. There's no word yet, however, if the electrified Santa Fe that we would be getting is either a regular hybrid or the plug-in hybrid.

For comparison, the 1.6-liter turbo-hybrid found in other markets produces 230 PS and 350 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 1.6-liter turbo PHEV cranks out a bit more with 265 PS although torque output is the same at 350 Nm. Both engines are then paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

With no word yet from Hyundai Philippines regarding the electrified Santa Fe, it seems they may still be making the necessary preparations before officially announcing its imminent reveal. Perhaps the only question we have now is, what will be its sticker price?
