Hyundai Ioniq 9 appears on DOE's list of recognized EVs

Hybrids and EVs continue to become more popular in the Philippines as brands roll out the latest electrified models in the country. One of those is Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH), which launched two hybrid models this year – the all-new Elantra and the Kona.

When it comes to EVs, Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 and the Ioniq 6. However, the brand's EV lineup may soon include another EV, the Ioniq 9. That's right, Hyundai's all-electric, three-row SUV is now officially recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE) as an EV.

Based on the listing we found, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is billed as a 2025 model year and is classified as a BEV (battery electric vehicle). It's also quite big as it measures 5000mm long, 1980mm wide, and 1790mm tall. Speaking of big, the Ioniq 9 also has a gross vehicle weight of over 3,000 kg, making it one of the heaviest EVs on the market.

The full specifications have yet to be revealed, although the DOE has listed the Ioniq 9 to have a total system output of 226.1 kW or 307 PS. This means the variant recognized by the DOE is the AWD variant that benefits from dual electric motors. It also puts out a very generous 605 Nm of torque.

Providing power to the Ioniq 9 is a 110.3 kWh battery pack. No exact range was given, but a quick check on what other markets get means the version for the Philippines is estimated to travel up to 570 km on a single charge.

With the Hyundai Ioniq 9 now recognized by the DOE, does this mean we can expect HMPH to launch the three-row electric SUV to take on the Kia EV9? Perhaps, but do remember that gray market importers also sell certain versions of the Hyundai (and Kia) models that are not offered by the official distributors.

For now, all we can do is wait and see if HMPH also decides to officially launch the Ioniq 9 in the country.
