Hyundai Grandeur looks like a 21st-century DeLorean

Here at AutoIndustriya.com, we’re never above doing throwbacks, and with a little help from Hyundai, we can’t help but feel nostalgic about the DMC DeLorean upon seeing the Korean automaker’s seventh-generation flagship sedan, the Grandeur.

As futuristic as it looks – it has been 40 years since we saw Marty McFly go back in time – the Grandeur shares plenty of similarities, including the boxy headlamps, the horizontal finish of the front fascia, and the fastback rear.

“The seventh-generation Grandeur expresses our respect for the past and commitment to move on to the future. We are creating a new standard for the premium sedan market through emotive design and a refined customer experience,” said SangYup Lee, executive vice president and Head of Hyundai Design Center.

On the body of the Hyundai Grandeur is the brand’s latest philosophy called Seamless Horizon Lamp, which is inspired by the first light of dawn. It emphasizes the wide stance of the vehicle and its parametric jewel grille. Along the side is a character line over the smooth surface highlighted by auto-flush door handles. The wheelbase stretches to increase cabin space for this four-door premium sedan.

The cabin of the Grandeur uses first-class, sustainable materials, including real wood, aluminum, and naturally dyed Nappa leather, over the wrap-around interior layout, and injects the Korean aesthetic to elicit a feeling of calmness and relaxation. Hyundai adds ambient lighting along the door trim and the dashboard, and interactive lighting on the upper right side of the integrated display.

Hyundai gets inspiration from the first-generation Grandeur’s steering wheel and reinterprets it into this single-spoke design on the latest model. The gear knob has been integrated into it and the position of the controls was changed for better ergonomics. The result is increased storage in the center console and more space for the wireless charging pad. Various leather touchpoints also have hygienic, anti-bacterial properties.

All it's missing now are the gullwing doors. Perhaps Hyundai can make that happen in a future facelift? We're keeping our fingers crossed.
