GT-R Next: Nissan reveals Hyper Force EV concept

It was 22 years ago at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show that Nissan wowed the automobile world when they revealed the concept that would become the R35 GT-R. And now in 2023 they’ve got something very similar: a concept that will become the next GT-R.

Nissan has come to the 2023 Japan Mobility Show with a line-up of no less than five EV concept cars that preview a smarter and personality-centric future for automobiles with the Hyper Urban, Hyper Punk, Hyper Adventure, and Hyper Tourer. Each concept vehicle is focused around a specific purpose or personality (e.g. freedom of expression for Hyper Punk) and envisions a future where vehicles are tailored in the same way.

The centerpiece, however, is a high-performance concept car called the Hyper Force. And yes, this concept will evolve to become the successor to the GT-R.

Nissan’s designers have clearly have been liberal with the aesthetics of their five concepts, most especially with the Hyper Force. The two-door performance car looks geometrically aggressive for this new era of automobiles, setting a new benchmark as the original concept car did in 2001. What’s also interesting is how Nissan used scissor-style doors for the Hyper Force.

The interior is likewise futuristic with a cockpit aesthetic centered around a yoke-style steering wheel and racing seats. The interior changes colors and graphics (with the help of Gran Turismo/Polyphony Digital) depending on driving mode. In GT mode, the colors are predominantly blue, while in R mode it is predominantly red.

The core of the Hyper Force is an all-electric powertrain with the lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body. Nissan already has the all-wheel drive technology called Nissan e-4ORCE as well as solid state battery technology. When combined for the Hyper Force, Nissan says it can produce upwards of 1000 kilowatts of power. In terms of horsepower, that amounts to about 1,360 horsepower.

Nissan is flexing their expansive experience and vision for the future of EV mobility. Nissan president and CEO Makoto Uchida says that these five concept cars represent a future where safer, cleaner mobility doesn’t have to sacrifice “passions or dreams”.
