Great Wall Shanhai pick-up is a luxury SUV in disguise
Great Wall Motors expands truck lineup with a new luxury pick-up based on the Tank 500 SUV

Last year, Great Wall Motors (GWM) launched a pick-up truck named the King Kong Cannon. Despite its very unique name, the truck features an imposing front end, large dimensions, and a wide array of turbocharged engines available at its disposal.

For 2022, GWM has released yet another pick-up truck called the Shanhai (not Shanghai). It measures 5440mm long, 1991mm wide, and 1924mm tall. But despite the difference in size with the King Kong Cannon, it carries with it a similar muscular exterior that's both stylish and aggressive. It also comes with a unique split-type tailgate that allows for easier loading/unloading of cargo from the bed.

But what really surprised us with the Shanhai is its level of luxury. Starting with the former, the Shanhai is not your typical work truck. Borrowing inspiration from the Tank 500 SUV, it comes with an almost similar cabin design that comes with full-leather upholstery, wood grain trim panels, and a huge touchscreen infotainment system. Even the rear passengers are treated to electrically-adjustable seats which are usually reserved for the front occupants.

As for its powertrain, GWM's new pick-up is available with a powerful twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6. It makes a potent 354 PS with 500 Nm of torque and is coupled to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. To help it go over any terrain, the Shanhai comes with a BorgWarner 4WD system that enhances its off-road capability. If the drivetrain and engine look familiar, that's because it's likely derived from the Tank 500 SUV we mentioned earlier.

Other details about the pick-up are not yet available. But given its large size, powerful V6 engine, and luxurious appointments, we won't be surprised if this will be a hit with buyers in its home market. Heck, should Great Wall Motors decide to set up shop in the country, the Shanhai could become popular here in the Philippines as a luxury pick-up truck.
If GWM actually brings this here in the country, would you get it over other pick-up trucks? Let us know in the comments
