Geely Renault joint venture invents tiny engine that converts EVs to REEVs
Horse C15 features a 1.5-liter engine, generator, inverter, and cooler in a suitcase-sized package

Automakers have currently slowed down the pace of development of EVs, as adoption has proved slow in the global market. While most have already shifted their electrification targets, the joint venture company formed by Renault and Geely has invented a solution that makes it easier for OEMs to convert EVs into range-extended EVs.
Horse Powertrains has revealed the C15 at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, which basically serves as a conversion kit that consists of a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a generator, an inverter, and a compact cooling package.

Measuring just 500 x 550 x 275 mm, the tiny power unit can be installed both horizontally and vertically to fit either the rear or front luggage compartments (frunk) of existing EVs. Since the combustion engines of REEVs are not directly connected to the drive wheels, the kit can be easily integrated into existing EV drive units to recharge its batteries and improve range.
The Horse C15 is compliant with Euro 7 standard emissions, and is available in a 95-horsepower, naturally aspirated form for subcompact to compact vehicle applications. For larger vehicles, there’s a turbocharged version that boosts power to 163 horsepower.

Currently, Horse Powertrain has OEM deals with Renault, Geely, Volvo, Proton, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Punch Torino, and has also been tapped to supply engines for Mercedes-Benz in the upcoming third-generation CLA.
