Ford unveils 2025 Ranger plug-in hybrid pickup truck

Ford is indeed intent on giving the Ranger “the best of both worlds”.

After a short teaser campaign, Ford has confirmed they are making the Ranger an electrified pick-up truck. And no, it's not just a mild hybrid with a 48-volt system nor an HEV; Ford goes all-in by making the Ranger a plug-in hybrid pickup truck.This means the Ranger plug-in hybrid can offer zero emissions in EV mode while giving the towing, off-road, and payload capabilities we've come to expect from the T6.2 Ranger platform.

But unlike the Ranger we have in the country that's powered by turbodiesels, the Ranger plug-in hybrid that's coming in 2025 will be powered by a 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery system.

So far, Ford has not revealed official power figures but says the Ranger plug-in hybrid will deliver more torque than any other Ranger. This means we should expect the Ranger PHEV to go past the 583 Nm of torque being produced by the Ranger Raptor's 3.0-liter Ecoboost V6 unit.

Along with the bump in torque, the Ranger PHEV can also be driven in pure EV mode for up to 45 kilometers while having a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg.

In terms of versatility, the Ranger PHEV will feature Pro Power Onboard, enabling owners to power their tools and appliances on a worksite or remote campsite by plugging them into power outlets embedded in both the cargo bed and the cabin. By our understanding, this should be similar to the V2L (vehicle-to-load) features of most battery-electric vehicles.

Currently, Ford has confirmed the Australian market is getting the Ranger plug-in hybrid in early 2025. There are no details yet for its ASEAN market release, but rest assured we'll keep our eyes peeled regarding this development.
