First segment of NLEX Connector 94% done, opens Q1 2023

NLEX Corporation will have a pretty busy 2023. Not only are they set to finish a major infrastructure, but they’re also preparing to begin new projects and road enhancements this 2023.

First and foremost, the company announced that the first 5 km section of the NLEX Connector is nearing completion. In fact, its first segment which will span from Caloocan to Espana in Manila is already 94% finished. More importantly, it’s expected to open within the first quarter (Q1) of 2023. Originally, it was set to be finished by the end of 2022. But due to unforeseen delays, its date of completion had to be moved.

Meanwhile, the remaining 3 km segment is now 29% complete and will link Espana with Sta. Mesa. Part of the construction of the second section covers the redevelopment of the Magsaysay Boulevard that will feature on and off ramps in Magsaysay and Sta. Mesa, improving portions of the local road network such as Osmena Highway, Nagtahan, Rizal Ave. extension, G. Araneta Ave., and A. Bonifacio Ave. It will also allow easier travel to various areas like Manila City Hall, Quiapo Church, University Belt, Intramuros, Rizal Park, Gilmore, Cubao, and San Juan.

Apart from the NLEX Connector, NLEX Corporation will also begin the construction of the Candaba Third Viaduct in Q1 of 2023. This project will expand the 5-km bridge from the existing three lanes without shoulders to three lanes with inner and outer shoulders per direction. The new bridge, once finished, will enable faster journeys as it will increase the maximum speed at the viaduct from 60 km/h to 80 km/h. Also in the pipeline is the construction of new expressway lanes in Pampanga from San Fernando to the SCTEX Spur in Mabalacat.

Besides building new roads, NLEX Corporation is looking to enhance its existing roads by conducting regular pavement repair and bridge strengthening programs, replacement of safety devices, and continuous enhancement of its toll systems. Additionally, the company will install more CCTVs along NLEX, SCTEX, and SFEX.

In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, NLEX will also start using electrified vehicles in its operations. These include the Nissan Kicks e-Power and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which will be used by NLEX-SCTEX patrol crews to decarbonize part of the MVP Group’s thrust toward sustainability. Last but not least, the tollway company will continue this year its resource-saving initiatives of harnessing solar power in select toll plazas.
