EX90 revealed as Volvo's flagship, 7-seat EV SUV
Electric capability meets practicality in the all-new Volvo EX90

Volvo is adamant about its push towards a zero emissions future. Just a few years earlier, the Swedish automaker launched the XC40 and C40 Recharge electric vehicles (EVs). Then in March 2021, Volvo announced that they will be parting ways with the internal combustion engine by 2030.

This means that at around 7 years' time, Volvo will be ditching its hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains in favor of pure electric propulsion systems. To further drive their point home towards zero emissions, the automaker recently launched the EX90 EV SUV. Serving as Volvo's flagship three-row electric SUV, the EX90 signals the start of a new era for the automaker. It also comes with plenty of intelligent driver aids and high-tech autonomous driving capabilities.
Starting with its looks, the EX90's exterior looks borrows heavily from the Concept Recharge the automaker revealed last year. With a tapered roofline, sleek side profile, and a drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd, the EX90 is one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in Volvo's lineup to date. Giving the EX90 its Volvo identity are the signature Thor's Hammer LED daytime running lights, C-shaped LED taillights, shield-like grille, and distinct alloy wheels.

Also noticeable on the EX90 is what appears to be a fancy roof antenna. In reality, that is actually a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor for the vehicle's built-in self-driving feature. This gives the EX90 the ability to sense the road in front of it, day or night, and even at highway speeds. It can also detect small objects hundreds of meters ahead and serves as the main feature for the vehicle's automated driving function called “Pilot Assist”.
Hop inside the EX90 and a huge 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment greets the occupants. Since the vehicle has fewer physical buttons, the huge screen is used to operate most of the cabin functions of the vehicle. In addition, the touchscreen features Google's Android Automotive OS which gives it intelligent voice recognition and commands and can even accept over-the-air updates (OTA).

Other amenities inside the EX90 include a digital instrument panel, a clutter-free dashboard/center console, cabin materials made from 48 kg of sustainable materials like recycled plastic bottles, wool bend seat fabrics, and sustainably-sourced wood.
At the heart of the EX90 7-seat EV is a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain that Volvo claims allows it to travel for 600 km on a single charge. Volvo also mentioned that the system comes with bi-directional charging which allows it to send power back to the grid if needed. Two versions of the EX90 will be available upon launch and both are equipped with a 107 kWh battery that can use a 250 kW DC charging system that can be recharged from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes.

The standard EX90 generates 414 PS with 770 Nm of torque while the Performance model cranks out a monstrous 517 PS and 910 Nm of pull. Despite weighing in at a hefty 2,818 kg, Volvo says the EX90 can catapult itself from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The all-new Volvo EX90 is set to be available in select markets soon although prices have yet to be revealed.
