Everest Wildtrak: Is this Ford's next project?

Ford has filed patents in Australia for what looks like a beefed-up Everest. And that has us thinking: is Ford working on a new off-road version of its famous seven-seater? Is this going to be a Wildtrak variant of the Everest?

Let's try to clear that up. The images filed by Ford in Australia show a unique front fascia with a pronounced X motif which is normally finished in black. On the Ranger, that same design element is seen on the Wildtrak. 

There are speculations that it could be an Everest Raptor, but the width of the vehicle is an indicator against that; it doesn't seem wide enough to be a Raptor-ized Everest. This might mean that the Wildtrak badging might be more feasible. 

There is also a visible 360-degree camera system (if you look under the mirrors and the tailgate garnish) hinting at a higher trim version like the Platinum. Ford may also be debuting new 19- or 20-inch wheels.

With wider shoulders and a beefed-up body, this new Everest model might fill the gap between a high grade variant and a Raptor in the way that the Wildtrak does.

Ford's project chief for the Ranger, Ian Foston, told the Australian website Drive.com.au that they can do anything with regard to the platforms of the Ranger and Everest given the commonality. It really just depends on whether there is customer demand for such a model.

Whether this will be an Everest Wildtrak or not, only Ford knows what the future holds for the Everest line. They really don't comment too much on future models, but we won't be surprised if they go for it. What is for sure is that a diverse lineup is a good thing, and the experience that Ford had with how customers received the Range Raptor is proof positive of that.
