DeLorean comes back from the future with Alpha5

Remember when DeLorean released a teaser image of an all-new EV concept? Well, the cat is officially out of the bag as the company has revealed the first-ever images and details of its new vehicle.

This is the DeLorean Alpha5, and it has gullwing doors like its grandad, the iconic DMC-12. But unlike its predecessor which originally came with a V6 engine, this one runs on pure electric power.

But first, let's talk about its design. While it may not look exactly like the DMC-12 from Back To The Future, Italdesign made sure Alpha5 has several styling cues from the car made famous by the Back To The Future trilogy. It has a swoopy coupe-like roofline, a distinct beltline that runs the entire length of the vehicle, as well as rear louvers which is a nice throwback to the original car.

It even comes with muscular curves and arches on the hood, wheel arches, and quarter panels which make it stand out more from other EVs on the road. Providing extra flair on the Alpha5 are the massive alloy wheels, two-tone paint finish, and of course, the gullwing doors. They don't open with the famous 'whoosh' sound effect, but they are elegant, aren't they?

Once opened, the Alpha5 greets occupants with 2+2 seating. With that, rear occupants can expect to experience a sportier ride while seated at the back. It also does away with traditional buttons as most of its features can be activated via the touchscreen on the dashboard.

Meanwhile, the driver will benefit from a new digital cluster, along with a flat-bottomed steering wheel. With only a handful of physical buttons, the dashboard of the Alpha5 is clutter-free and is sleek to look at.

DeLorean has yet to describe the Alpha5's electric powertrain. What we do know is that DeLorean claims it can go from 0 – 97 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and can hit an electronically-limited top speed of 241 km/h. It also has a 100 kWh lithium-ion battery which allows the EV to have an estimated range of 483 km on a single charge. It doesn't have a flux capacitor or the acclaimed 1.21 gigawatts of power like the DeLorean from Back To The Future, but we're impressed nonetheless.

Only 88 cars (movie fans will know) will be made in total which means this DeLorean will be quite rare. Production of the EV itself will be outsourced to Italy while the electric powertrain will come from a UK supplier.

The Alpha5 may not have the ability to time-travel, but given how Italdesign made it look, we won't be surprised if they were able to travel back to the future in order to design the all-new EV. If you want to see it in the metal, the DeLorean Alpha5 will make its public debut at Pebble Beach in California this August before entering production in 2024.
