D'Ambrosio claims fifth round of 2015-16 Formula E in Mexico

The fifth round of the 2015-16 Formula E was filled with drama and last minute surprises. Jerome D'Ambrosio has been awarded first place in the inaugural Mexico ePrix after Lucas di Grassi, who originally took the checkered flag, was disqualified due to the weight of his car.

The Abt Schaeffler car that di Grassi used for the first part of the race was found to weigh 886.2kg, 1.8 kg under the 888kg minimum as stated by article 5.1 of the FIA Formula E technical regulations.

The team has yet to decide if they will appeal the decision.

This is the second time that di Grassi was disqualified and has lost maximum points score after race stewards discovered that his car was fitted with illegal modifications during the 2015 Berlin ePrix.

For the first three laps, di Grassi was determined to win the first Formula E race in Mexico as he established a comfortable advantage over D'Ambrosio and Sebastien Buemi. However, di Grassi's effort came to no avail after he was stripped of the win.

As a result, D'Ambrosio was declared the race winner, followed by Buemi and Nico Prost. Loic Duval finished in fourth but, he was handed a 15-second penalty for repeatedly cutting the chicane as well as ignoring the black and white flag. Despite incurring the said penalty, Duval remains classified fourth.

Robin Frijns finished in fifth ahead of Sam Bird, Daniel Abt and Nick Heildfeld. Completing the top ten drivers are Stephane Sarrazin and Bruno Senna.

After the fifth round of 2015-16 Formula E, Buemi still leads the drivers' standings with 98 points. He is followed by di Grassi with 76 points and Bird with 60.

The sixth round of the 2015-16 Formula E will be on April 2 in Long Beach, USA.
