Daihatsu reveals 2023 Ayla hatchback after Wigo Agya and Axia

We've already seen the all-new Toyota Agya (AKA Wigo) and Perodua Axia make their world premiere in Indonesia and Malaysia, respectively. But where is the next-generation Daihatsu Ayla from which both vehicles are based on?

Days after the Agya and Axia were revealed, Daihatsu also unveiled the new-generation Ayla in its home market in Indonesia. But while the Wigo Agya comes with its own unique exterior, the Ayla shares some of its exterior design with the Axia.

Starting with the front fascia, the 2023 Ayla gets the same aggressive front bumper and LED daytime running lights as the Axia. Even the foglight bezels on the far corners appear to have been inspired by Perodua's design language. But not everything is a carbon copy.

The grille on the Ayla is unique as it features a distinct mesh-like design which is different from what the Axia has. The rear, on the other hand, is also similar to the Perodua although the Daihatsu hatchbacks get an additional taillight garnish which the Axia lacks.

Moving inside, the interior of the 2023 Ayla is largely shared with the Axia as well. From the free-standing touchscreen infotainment to the digital air-conditioning panel, as well as the steering wheel and instrument binnacle, the Daihatsu's cabin doesn't look too far off from what the Toyota Agya and Perodua Axia have. While the instrument cluster only comes with analog gauges that are paired to a multi-info display, higher-grade variants will come with the all-digital screen first seen in the Toyota Raize.

Like the Wigo Agya that was revealed last week, the Daihatsu Ayla comes with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder WA-VE engine. It makes a similar 88 PS with 113 Nm of torque and is connected to a new D-CVT. Daihatsu claims that compared to the previous 1.0-liter motor, the new 1.2-liter engine is 10% more fuel efficient while also delivering 15% better acceleration.

A wide array of safety features are available in the all-new Ayla. Aside from the usual anti-lock brakes and dual front airbags, the automaker also mentioned the hatchback can be specified with; vehicle stability control (VSC), hill-start assist (HSA), keyless entry, and an engine start/stop button.
