Confirmed: Electric Land Rover Defender coming before decade ends

To say that the Defender is now one of the most popular vehicles Land Rover is currently selling is an understatement. Not only is it available in 90, 110, and 130 Series body styles, but it also comes with a wide array of features and amenities to help the occupants relax and have peace of mind in both on-road and off-road conditions.

Moreover, the Defender is now available as a plug-in hybrid after Land Rover Philippines distributor Coventry Motors launched the PHEV P400e that makes 404 PS and 640 Nm of torque. If that's not your cup of tea, the Defender is also available with a 3.0-liter twin-charged inline-six mild-hybrid, a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo-diesel, as well as a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-four.

With so many body styles, engine choices, as well as accessory packs to choose from, customers are essentially spoiled for choice when selecting their preferred Defender. But what if a customer prefers a zero-emissions version of the Defender?

Worry not as a fully-electric version of the go-anywhere SUV is already in the works. This was confirmed by none other than Coventry Motors boss Chris Ward. During the official launch of the 2023 Range Rover Sport, the executive mentioned that it will be launched before the decade ends. That means we can expect the electric Defender to be revealed before 2030.

The exact details regarding the upcoming Defender EV are not yet available. However, Ward mentioned that Land Rover is already busy working on a prototype. But other than that, the executive said that he cannot share any more details as it's still being tested thoroughly.

With the Defender already capable of electric drive via the aforementioned P400e PHEV, it's not too far off that Land Rover will be able to make a fully-electric version a reality in the next coming years. Perhaps the only question now is just how much range and power can we expect from the Defender EV.
