Chevrolet ending Camaro model run in 2024

As early as 2019, there have been rumors going around that the Camaro will be axed from Chevrolet's lineup.

While a 7th-generation model was originally planned, the bow-tie brand supposedly changed its mind and decided to have the entire program relegated to the current 6th-generation's remaining production years. With the Camaro seemingly living on borrowed time, it looks like Chevrolet has “unofficially” announced the sports car's demise as early as four years ago.

Today, we can officially confirm that the Chevrolet Camaro will be bowing out. After nine model years in the market, the 6th generation Camaro will retire at the conclusion of the 2024 model year. With it, the last batch of the Camaros will roll off the assembly line at the company's Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan in January 2024.

But don't think that the Camaro will be going away permanently. Scott Bell, vice president at Global Chevrolet, said that while they are preparing to say farewell to the Camaro, this is not yet the end of its story. However, an immediate successor for the Camaro has not yet been planned.

“As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee, and race fan. While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro’s story,” said Bell.

In order to give the Camaro its special send-off before it rides off into the sunset, Chevrolet will celebrate the nameplate's storied history with the addition of the Collector's Edition. This will be available for the 2024 Camaro RS, and SS, and on a limited number of ZL1-equipped vehicles available in North America.

While no exact details have been revealed just yet, Chevrolet did say that the Collector's Edition will pay homage to the Camaro's development of the first-generation model in the 1960s, most notably the program's initial code name; Panther.

Those that plan to get the Collector's Edition once they roll out will be happy to know that it will be quite the special model. Based on the teaser images provided, the ZL1 Collector's Edition will have a huge wing at the back, a huge hood scoop, and a unique Camaro nameplate that will feature an image of Panther in the middle of the R.

More information about the Collector's Edition package for the Camaro will be available closer to the start of orders later this year. With the Camaro set to be discontinued soon, those that still plan to get one better visit their nearest dealership soon.
