BMW is saying goodbye to the V12 engine

There are only a handful of automakers that offer a V12-powered vehicle today. It's mainly due to tightening government regulations and the market's shift towards electrification. One of those companies that still do is BMW. However, even the Bavarian marque will be bidding farewell to its glorious V12 engine very soon.

Come June 2022, the company will produce its last V12 engines for a road car, and they’ll mark the occasion with a limited run of 7 Series models called “The Final V12”.

BMW has yet to officially reveal the send-off models apart from its unique V12 badge atop the metal flake paint. However, they did say all 12 units of the special edition 7 Series will be based on the M760i xDrive and ride on exclusive 20-inch wheels finished in either Window Gray or Jet Black. Inside, each door sill will have a plate that reads “The Final V12”, which can also be found in the engine. There's also a commemorative plaque that says “1 of 12” mounted on the center console.

Customers that are given the opportunity to own the special edition 7 Series will be able to choose from over 80 BMW Individual paint colors. Other personalization options include picking the color of the brake calipers and any of BMW’s available Individual Full Merino leather choices.

Under the hood, the Final V12 7 Series will be powered by the outgoing 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 that produces 602 horsepower and 800 Nm torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, it allows the luxury sedan to accelerate from 0 to 97 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.

The automaker says it plans to offer The Final V12 to buyers with a history of V12 BMW ownership. That means not anyone will be able to get their hands on the company’s last 12-cylinder model. Production of the send-off V12-powered 7 Series will begin in June 2022, with deliveries starting in July. Pricing has yet to be revealed, but expect it to cost a lot more than a standard M760Li.
