BMW i4 EV more powerful than the M3, M4

When we think of fast and powerful BMWs, the first models that will likely come to mind are the M cars like the M2 Competition, M5, and M8. They are the brand's high-performance models, after all. But it seems one of BMW's new standard models has even more power than the M3 and M4 Competition. Unlike the two M cars, however, it doesn't have an engine. Instead, it runs on pure electric power – the new i4.

BMW has already given us an idea of what the i4 looks like a few weeks back. However, they did not disclose specific details regarding the interior, powertrain, performance figures, and when it will go on sale. Starting with the latter, it seems the electric 4 Series will arrive at dealerships in November. It will also be available in two trims at launch – i4 M50 and i4 eDrive40.

Thanks to its two electric motors (one at each axle), the i4 M50 produces 544 horsepower with a maximum system torque of 795 Nm and an all-wheel-drive system. As a result, the sedan can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Despite the power figures, BMW says it still has a range of 510 kilometers based on the WLTP cycle. Like most M Sport models, the i4 M50 features model-specific adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering, M Sport braking system, and optional M wheels. It also wears a different set of bumpers compared to the eDrive40. 

It may be down on power compared to the i4 M50, but the i4 eDrive40 isn't a slouch either. It still has 340 horsepower and 430 Nm torque. Unlike the M50, the eDrive40 is rear-wheel drive only. As a result, the 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes a bit longer at 5.7 seconds. The advantage of this variant is increased range. While the M50 can only do 510 kilometers, the eDrive40 has 590 kilometers of range.

Inside, BMW didn't just carry over the 4 Series cabin into the i4 and called it a day. Greeting the driver is a wide display that integrates the instrument cluster and infotainment system. It somewhat reminds us of Mercedes-Benz's current system. As with all new BMWs, the i4 comes with the latest iDrive 8 interface.

Will we see the i4 here in the Philippines? It's possible. If you visit the BMW Philippines website, they already have a tab for the electric “i” vehicles, and the iX is already listed there. Maybe in a few months, we'll also see the i4 there.
