Audi says goodbye to TT coupe after 25 years in production

It's the end of the line for one of Audi's most popular models.

After 25 years in production spanning three generations, the final Audi TT has rolled off the German carmaker's Györ plant in Hungary. This caps off a total of 662,762 units that were produced from February 1998 to November 2023.

The final Audi TT is a Chronos Grey TTS Quattro Coupe that's powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo and comes with all-wheel-drive. It's one of the fastest TT variants in the lineup, second only to the TT RS that has the 400 PS 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo.

The Audi TT was previewed as a concept at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show and was named after the famous motorcycle race in the Isle of Man called the Tourist Trophy. The first-generation TT coupe went on sale three years later, sharing most of its bits with the fourth-generation Volkswagen Golf. In 1999, Audi came up with a roadster version of the TT that had its appearance in the 2000 movie Mission Impossible 2.

The hotter TTS and TT RS versions came out in the second-generation TT, while subsequent generations continued to share platforms with the VW Golf. Throughout the TT's model cycle, Audi offered multiple gasoline engine options ranging from the original 1.8-liter, 20-valve turbo, to the five-cylinder turbo in the TT RS and the 3.2 VR6. The second and third-gen TT was even offered with a diesel variant.

As crossovers and SUVs took over the automotive world, there's not enough market nowadays for coupes like the Audi TT to make any business sense. In fact, the TT is just one of Audi's retiring models, as the R8 supercar is also set to bow out soon.
