Audi's new EV plant in China will be carbon neutral

Audi is aggressively keeping pace with their ‘Vorsprung 2030’ electrification strategy. The brand with four rings has announced that a new dedicated EV (electric vehicle) plant will begin construction in China this year. It will begin production by 2024.

The new e-car manufacturing facility is on a 150-hectare property in Changchun, China. It is a city in the Jilin province known for having the largest automobile manufacturing, and research and development center.

As part of their Mission:Zero program, the plant will be carbon dioxide neutral and will use a completely new IT architecture. Production areas at the plant will include a press shop, body construction, paint shop, and final assembly line in addition to an in-house battery assembly. It will have the capacity to make 150,000 electrified vehicles annually.

“The Audi-FAW NEV Company will play a central role in our electrification strategy in China. We are excited to have achieved another important milestone in the realization of this project along with our partner FAW. Now we can give all our attention to the continued setting-up of the company as well as begin with construction on the new plant,” says Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG.

This EV manufacturing plant is under the newly-formed Audi-FAW NEV (new energy vehicle) Company Ltd., and will be the first to fully focus on nothing but electric Audi vehicles using the Premium Platform Electric (PPE).

While the site has yet to even break ground, Audi has already announced that three models will be co-developed with Porsche, and two of these will be an electric SUV and an e-limousine.

This latest effort puts Audi on track with the ‘Vorsprung 2030’ electrification strategy. Short term goal is to have 20 fully electric automobiles by 2025 en route to zero vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2033.
