All-new Mitsubishi ASX to be based on a Renault

It’s been over a decade since Mitsubishi launched the third-generation ASX. First debuting in the Philippines way back in 2010, it served as Mitsubishi’s compact crossover offering.

It then received its first facelift in late 2014 and was followed by another update in late 2016. However, the model wasn’t as popular as Mitsubishi hoped for. Eventually, the automaker quietly removed the ASX from the local lineup.

In other markets, however, the ASX lived on and even received a third facelift in early 2019. It now features the brand’s latest Dynamic Shield look and even borrows some styling cues from the Eclipse Cross and the Xpander MPV.

But despite its many facelifts, it is still based on an old platform that was first introduced in 2010. This means the ASX is over a decade old and a full model change is due for the aging crossover. Luckily, Mitsubishi plans to introduce an all-new model next year. 

Mitsubishi has announced that the next-generation ASX will be launched in early 2023. This was confirmed by Takao Kato, president and CEO of Mitsubishi. In addition, the next-generation ASX will be one of two new models that Mitsubishi will introduce in Europe in the near future.

But unlike the outgoing model which was developed solely by Mitsubishi, the next generation will be based on Renault’s bestsellers. More importantly, it will also be using shared powertrains from the French automaker that include a hybrid variant, as well as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version

“Renault and Mitsubishi Motors are collaborating to reinforce our presence in Europe by sharing 2 Renault platforms and powertrains, including hybrid and PHEV. These vehicles will be manufactured in the same Renault plant,” said Kato.

While specifics were not shared in detail, the new ASX could be underpinned by the CMF-B platform which is currently seeing use in the Renault Arkana. With that, we might see the ASX come with a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine or a 1.6-liter gasoline hybrid under the hood.

Other details of the next-generation ASX are still a mystery. Hopefully, the automaker will release several teasers in the coming months before its global debut next year.
