All-new Maserati GranTurismo gets MC20's twin-turbo V6

Back in April of this year, Maserati previewed its all-electric future with the GranTurismo Folgore. Despite not having an engine under the hood, the electric coupe comes with a powerful 800-volt battery pack that will crank out over 1,200 PS to all four wheels.

Impressive, but since it's not yet released, it might take a while before Maserati actually launches it to the public. Moreover, there are still those who prefer their Maserati sports car powered by an internal combustion engine. Luckily, the Modena-based automaker has just revealed the first images of the all-new GranTurismo powered by a twin-turbo V6.

Unlike the Folgore, the regular GranTurismo gets a different front end courtesy of larger air intakes and a bigger grille for cooling the engine. It also gets different alloy wheels that show the large disc brakes along with the blue-painted calipers. Last but not least are the quad tailpipes that highlight the V6 engine under the hood.

Speaking of V6, the GranTurismo's engine is no ordinary six-cylinder. Powering this particular Maserati is 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 derived from the flagship MC20, the Nettuno (Italian for Neptune). While the automaker has yet to reveal how much power the V6 generates in the GranTurismo, we do know that it's capable of producing upwards of 630 PS and 730 Nm of torque.

But for its application in the grand tourer, Maserati will most likely dial down its power to around 530 PS with 620 Nm of torque. That's because the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 can also be found in the Grecale Trofeo crossover which already makes the same amount of power.

Also worth mentioning on the GranTurismo is its unique livery that features the signature Trident logo and 75th-anniversary badges on the windows. For Maserati, this livery conveys one simple message, the return of a Maserati icon created 75 years ago which started with the A6 1500. It would go on to influence the automotive landscape and be followed by successive generations of new Maserati road cars.

No official launch date has been revealed just yet. But with the GranTurismo Folgore set to be revealed in 2023, we won't be surprised if the V6-powered version will also be launched alongside its EV sibling. Despite having a set goal of selling only electric cars by 2030, it seems Maserati is not yet ready to say goodbye to internal combustion. Hopefully, the new GranTurismo will also make its way here in the country soon.
