2023 Subaru XV JDM: AWD is optional

Back in September, Subaru revealed the all-new 2023 Crosstrek. Originally called the XV in other markets like the Philippines, Subaru decided to retire that name in favor of Crosstrek in order to streamline the nomenclature of its models.

Fast forward to December, and the automaker has announced the Crosstrek's launch in its home market. But unlike its predecessors which were only available with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system, the third-generation Crosstrek is now available as a front-wheel drive vehicle (FWD).

No, we're not kidding. Subaru has indeed released a two-wheel drive (2WD) variant of the 2023 Crosstrek in Japan. This makes the FWD Crosstrek mechanically similar to the all-new Impreza which was just recently revealed at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Despite the availability of FWD, this particular Crosstrek is still available with the new electrified Boxer engine. Called e-Boxer, it has a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-four that makes 145 PS with 188 Nm of torque and is assisted by an electric motor that puts out an additional 14 PS and 65 Nm of pull. The powertrain is then paired to a Lineartronic CVT which can then send power to either all four wheels or just the front wheels.

Aside from launching it with a FWD option, Subaru also released an accessorized version. Beginning with the “Toughness” Package, the Crosstrek has been fitted with plastic components on the hood, headlights/taillights, grille, and door which give it a more rugged look. There's also the “Utility” package that sees the crossover come with interior lighting, cargo space covers, a trunk organizer, as well as extra compartments for storing items.

Last but not least are the STI accessories that let customers choose from stylish alloy wheels, dual exhaust pipes, a rear wing, and a strut tower bar for the front suspension.

There's no word yet when will the all-new Subaru Crosstrek will make its way here to the Philippines. But given that it's now on sale in Japan, we might only be several months before its local debut. The only question now is, will Motor Image Pilipinas bring the FWD version or stick with the traditional AWD variant?
