2023 Mitsubishi ASX to use Renault engines

Earlier this year, the Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Alliance announced that they will share 80% of vehicle platforms in order to cut costs and accelerate the shared future of each member for EVs and connected vehicles.

One of the vehicles that will share its platform is the next-generation Mitsubishi ASX. It has soldiered on for over a decade and only received several updates and a Dynamic Shield facelift several years ago. Fortunately, an all-new model will succeed the current generation and will make use of a Renault platform.

We already saw Mitsubishi reveal a teaser image of the upcoming Renault-based ASX back in February 2022. But the automaker has yet to say what powertrain options will be available for the new crossover apart from the fact that it will be available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powerplants. Luckily, Mitsubishi Germany has revealed the initial details of the ASX's new engines, and it looks like the 2023 ASX will use engines derived from the Renault Captur.

Starting with the entry-level version, the crossover will come with a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that makes a humble 91 PS. It is then mated exclusively to a 6-speed manual gearbox. There's also the larger 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder that produces 142 PS and can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Up next is the 1.6-liter inline-four hybrid that's assisted by an electric motor. It has a total system output of 147 PS and comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Serving as the most powerful version is a plug-in hybrid version of the 1.6 gasoline engine. It gets a helping hand from a pair of electric motors which results in a total system output of 162 PS.

Looking at the engine sizes and power outputs, it seems our hunch that the ASX will be based on the Renault Captur is spot-on. In Europe, the Captur comes with the same number of engine choices and similar output figures. This is further backed up by the fact that Mitsubishi has confirmed that the all-new ASX will be built at the same factory that manufactures Renaults in Europe.

No launch dates have been announced yet for the next-gen Mitsubishi ASX. But since it's billed as a 2023 model year vehicle, the automaker might hold its debut sometime later this year. The only question now is, will Mitsubishi offer the all-new ASX in other markets like Southeast Asia, or will it be a Europe-only model?
