2022 Volkswagen Lamando L looks like a Peugeot

Last year, photos of the next-generation Lamando surfaced online via China’s Ministry of Industry and Information. Unlike the model on sale in the Philippines today, this new one looks very different. In particular, the sedan doesn't look like any of Volkswagen’s current lineup. Instead, it appears to be inspired by a certain French automaker.

Fast forward to the present, and Volkswagen has now officially launched the model. Instead of just “Lamando”, the new model is called the Lamando L. Like before, it’s built by SAIC-Volkswagen but is now bigger in terms of size. The 2022 Lamando L measures 4784mm long, 1831mm wide, and 1469mm tall with a wheelbase of 2731mm. It also rides on the newer MQB Evo platform that underpins the new Golf.

The design of the Lamando L remains unchanged from the images we saw last year. Rather than a traditional sedan shape, it adopts a sleek fastback-like design. At the front, there’s a pair of large LED headlights connected by a light bar and an illuminated Volkswagen logo. The bumper features a large single-frame intake, making it look like the sedan is smiling.

At the rear, the Lamando L comes with a full-width taillight that resembles the ones fitted on the Peugeot 508. While it looks neat, we’re not sure if the French automaker will be too happy about the design. Range-topping variants of the Lamando L will even ride on 18-inch wheels, further enhancing its sleek design.

Inside, the cabin is similar to what you’d find in the current Golf Mk8. There’s a sleek dashboard with a large floating digital display front and center. In front of the driver is a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, while beside it is a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Other features include a Beats sound system, heads-up display, sunroof, and adaptive cruise control.

Powering the Lamando L is a 1.4-liter TSI engine producing 150 PS and 250 Nm torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Since Volkswagen Philippines sources models from VW-SAIC, does this mean we will see the new Lamando L in the country? It’s very possible. Given that the current Lomando sold locally made its global debut in 2014, it might be the right time to introduce a new, fresher-looking sedan for the market.
