LRT, GET PH deploy new EV buses

Train systems in the Metro are getting proper upgrades these days, as they should. And in addition, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) is also offering an emissions-free shuttle service to its passengers going to areas outside the LRT-1 line.

So what does this mean? Well, it's plain and simple. Once commuters step down from the LRT line 1 train stations, they could immediately hop onboard electric minibusses to travel to their designated areas.

LRMC has partnered with Global Electric Transport (GET) Philippines to provide the Community Optimized Managed Electric Transport (COMET) minibusses for the shuttle service program.

COMET electric minibusses are air-conditioned, fully electric, and zero-emission, with a capacity of 30 passengers and a travel range of over 100 kilometers on a single full charge. They are also equipped with onboard cameras, a media system, display monitors, internet connectivity, as well a wheelchair slot, and a retractable electric ramp for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Pilot implementation for this shuttle service covers the LRT-1 EDSA – Manila Bay Aseana route and vice versa. The COMET minibusses will load and unload passengers in designated areas along Macapagal boulevard to Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). Furthermore, according to LRMC, an additional route going to the Makati Central Business District will soon operate.

The COMET electric buses operate from 4am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday excluding holidays. And as a special promotional offer, LRT-1 Riders Club members can avail of free unlimited rides on the COMET electric bus through the GETPASS App starting 30 March 2022 until 17 April 2022.

Public transport in the Metro is slowly but surely gaining ground when it comes to comfort and convenience. It's also a good thing that the progress is leaning towards a greener future. Let's all hope they keep this up, regardless of the new administration that will take over in June.
