Isuzu Erga FCV: Fuel-cell powered bus made possible with Toyota

Isuzu will have plenty in store at this year’s Japan Mobility Show (JMS) after announcing several product launches and concept reveals at Tokyo Big Sight later this week. From the Multi-Fuel Engine to the Vertical Core Cycle Concept (VCCC) and the launch of the new Giga, Isuzu Motors Limited will have a show of force at the 2025 JMS. 

Joining the upcoming launches is another innovative commercial vehicle that aims to serve commuters better, safer, and with fewer emissions. After partnering with Honda two years ago for the Giga Fuel Cell EV truck that can do 800 km, Isuzu will debut the Erga FCV. It’s being jointly developed by both Isuzu and Toyota Motor Corporation, with Isuzu handling the vehicle body design and Toyota Motor Corporation working on the fuel cell system.

The Erga FCV uses the platform of the Erga EV that was launched last year (first revealed as a concept at JMS 2023), but generates electricity via a hydrogen fuel cell system developed by Toyota. Since the Erga EV has a flat-floor design, the Erga FCV has its fuel-cell system and hydrogen tanks placed onto the roof structure, maintaining the bus’ fully flat-floor design while achieving a barrier-free layout.

Like all FCVs, the Erga FCV generates electricity by inducing a chemical reaction between hydrogen stored in its tanks and oxygen from the air within the FC stack. This then powers the Erga FCV’s motors without producing emissions. Unlike traditional battery-powered EVs, which can be hindered by long recharge times, the Erga FCV’s fuel-cell system can be refilled faster, just like fueling with traditional fuel. More importantly, the only emission fuel-cell systems make is water vapor, thereby significantly reducing environmental impact.

The Erga FCV is just one of many carbon-neutral solutions the automaker has included in its mid-term business plan called “Isuzu Transformation - Growth to 2030”. By collaborating with a wide range of partners, Isuzu aims to propose new mobility options and advance carbon neutrality through a multi-pathway approach.

We’ll see the Erga FCV, the new Giga, as well as more of Isuzu’s upcoming concepts at this year’s JMS, which will open its doors later this week.
