It was a thrilling race for the 5th Macau Road Sport Challenge as local driver Sun Tit Fat took victory aboard the Team KFS Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX in heated 10-lap battle just a little over one-tenth of a second ahead of Thailand’s Nattavude Charoensukhawatana, also in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX. Hong Kong based Yam Chi Yuen finished closely in third place aboard another Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX.
Evos dominated the race, as 4 of the top 5 finishers were all driving highly modified versions of the 4-wheel drive monster. The roster of high-performance cars in the Macau Road Sport Challenge also includes Nissan Skyline GTRs, Subaru Impreza STi, Lotus Exige and Elise, Toyota GT86, Mazda RX-7 and RX-8, and a Honda NSX.
Track conditions prevented the race from a standing start; as it took place behind the safety car. When the race started from lap 2, it was a fierce battle between the top 3 cars, Chinese driver Han Han aboard his Subaru Impreza STi in second and Benny Kok Yik Yung from Hong Kong in another Impreza in third. Un Wai Kai, Yam Chi Yuen and Nattavude followed them closely aboard their Evos. From Laps 2 to 5, it was an exchange of fastest laps between Han and Sun Tit Fan, extending their lead for over 5 seconds from the rest of the field.
However, on lap 8 a sudden change of events saw Han Han and Un Wai Kai getting caught up with a stalled car, that enabled Nattavude and Yam Chi Yuen to inherit second and third places. The hard charging duo went to catch up with race leader Sun Tit Fan as they slowly closed the gap. On the final lap, Nattavude made contact with Sun Tit Fan. Both drivers tried to recover as they sprinted to the chequered flag with their damaged cars. Sun Tit Fan emerged victorious with Nattavude in second, Yam Chi Yuen in third, Han Han and Un Wai Kai in fourth and fifth places.
