GWM PHEVs: Power, Efficiency, and Off-Road Prowess
GWM is making a name for itself with its innovative Hi-4 and HI-4T plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology.

GWM is making a name for itself with its innovative Hi-4 and HI-4T plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology. This system takes center stage in their lineup, offering a unique blend of power, efficiency, and off-road capability. Let's dive deeper into what makes GWM's HI-4 and HI-4T PHEVs stand out.

The company’s commitment to plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology positions them as a frontrunner in the race for sustainable and powerful vehicles. GWM Chairman Wei Jiangjun largely credits himself for spearheading development of the company’s PHEV technology that was developed in-house by its own engineering team.

The Power of PHEV
The HI-4 and HI-4T system is a testament to GWM's engineering expertise. Here's what it entails:
- Dedicated Hybrid Architecture: At its core lies a dedicated hybrid architecture, seamlessly integrating a powerful gasoline engine, an electric motor, and an electronically controlled transmission (ECT).
- Turbocharged Performance: GWM utilizes turbocharged gasoline engines, ensuring strong performance when needed and a smooth transition to electric mode.
- High-Performance Battery with safety in mind: Battery cell design, as well as, integration to the vehicle incorporates intrinsic safety redundancy. The stacked low resistance design helps it achieve its high-performance capability.
- Tough Where the Road Ends: For off-road models, special battery packs feature stamped steel plates for upper shells with melting point of up to 1,500 degrees Celsius. The inner side is further protected with a fire-proof and heat-insulating coating. Furthermore, the cells feature fillers with high heat-insulating performance fillers to prevent thermal runaway.

Beyond Efficiency: A Driver's Delight
GWM’s PHEV system offers more than just fuel savings. Here are some additional advantages:
- Multiple Driving Modes: Drivers can choose between electric-only mode for zero emissions, hybrid mode for a blend of power and efficiency, and gasoline mode for extended range. This caters to various driving scenarios, from city commutes to off-road adventures.
- 9HAT Hybrid Special Gearbox: GWM developed its own vertical 9HAT gearbox, designed for hybrid off-road vehicles that features an integrated transmission and motor. It supports pure electric, hybrid, and ICE driving modes.
- Intelligent Power Management: The new intelligent four-wheel drive hybrid technology Hi4 achieves three major innovations, namely, the hybrid "new configuration" with three power sources and dual-axis distribution, the "new breakthrough" of the iTVC intelligent torque vector control system, and the "new height" of the electromechanical coupling transmission system.
- Seamless Adaptive Switching: The innovative hybrid system gives it a the ability to switch between 3 powertrains and 9 modes in a matter of milliseconds. The 3 new modes added are pure electric 4WD, parallel 4wd, and dual-axis energy recovery.

Built for Adventure: The Off-Road Advantage
One of the unique aspects of GWM's HI-4T PHEVs is their off-road capability. Here's why:
- Powerful Electric Motor: The electric motor provides instant torque, a crucial advantage for tackling challenging terrain.
- Intelligent 4WD: Many GWM HI-4T models come equipped with Intelligent 4WD systems, which feature TOD 4WD with Mlock mechanical locking and non-decoupling structure. With its 3 differential locks, it ensures optimal traction and control on loose surfaces, while minimizing power waste.
- Intelligent Off-Road Modes: Some models offer dedicated off-road driving modes that adjust various vehicle parameters for optimal performance on different terrains.
A Glimpse into GWM's HI-4T Lineup

Tank Series: These vehicles, like the Tank 400 and Tank 700, showcase the off-road prowess of HI-4T, combining PHEV efficiency with rugged capability.

WEY PHEVs: Luxury options like the WEY Gaoshan, Lanshan, and Mocha also utilize the same technology.

The Future of Sustainable Mobility
GWM's PHEVs offer a compelling solution for drivers seeking a balance between power, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. With the continuous refinement of its Hi-4 and HI-4T platforms and expansion of its PHEV lineup, GWM is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
