Over the last two decades, the diesel engine has undergone a technological revolution. with the introduction of highly innovative engine technologies such as Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi), variable valve timing, advanced turbocharging systems, and more. Collectively, these modern advancements largely explain why today’s diesel engines can produce more power and torque while remaining fuel-efficient and emitting less harmful emissions. But, to take full advantage of all the benefits that today’s modern diesel engines have to offer, every vehicle owner must be aware of the engine’s overall condition. To find out, here’s a quick rundown on how to properly maintain your diesel engine to keep it running clean and prevent unnecessary breakdowns.

Observe your PMS schedules

Often overlooked, regular Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) is one of the key factors towards having a long-lasting diesel engine. Keep in mind that car manufacturers have optimally determined these preventive maintenance periods. Its main role is to prevent unnecessary engine breakdowns or component failure even before it happens. Regularly following the PMS schedules allows the car manufacturer to check the diesel engine’s overall condition and replace defective parts as needed. Remember, it is cheaper to maintain, than having to repair. Thus, proving that prevention is certainly better than cure.

Inspect your consumables

Apart from the diesel engine’s internal components, it also includes external parts that allow the engine to operate efficiently. Most of these are highly wearable parts, meaning they will break down over time and require replacement. Normally, these items are checked/replaced every PMS schedule and partially specified in the owner’s manual and include oil filter, drive belts, air filter, fuel filter, and so on. Failure or neglecting to replace one or more of these parts will translate to sluggish engine performance and poor fuel mileage.

Ensure your engine cooling system is in tip-top condition

Excessive heat is the engine’s number one enemy as this could lead to overheating and cause irreversible damage. To prevent this from happening, this means regularly checking the overall condition of the cooling system. Start with the cooling fans and observe that they are properly working. Electric-powered fans should turn on/off automatically, while a worn-out clutch fan will spin easily. Check the radiator cap, hoses, and the radiator itself for any signs of leaks. Following the car manufacturer's recommended service schedule and coolant type, change the radiator coolant. Lastly, observe the temperature gauge and check if the needle stays in the normal operating range.

Listen for strange noises, note any unusual vibrations

A normal operating vehicle shouldn’t be emitting unusual noises or vibrations as these are all signs that there’s something wrong. Pay attention to abnormal sounds and vibrations while driving and try to determine where it is coming from. If you suspect that it’s under the hood, this could range from broken engine support, a loose drive belt, a cracked exhaust pipe, and more. If you suddenly notice a puddle of oil or water under the car, which wasn’t apparent before, have it checked as this could indicate an engine leak.

Use top-quality fuel with great cleaning properties

While many motorists tend to choose the affordable option when filling up their cars, not all diesel fuel undergo the same refining processes resulting in a cleaner engine. Fuel is like the water you drink; the cleaner, the better. This is the main reason why Caltex follows stringent refining processes and scientifically proven formulations, which stems from their continuous research & development. This constant search to provide the best diesel fuel has led them to come up with Caltex Power Diesel with Techron D, their latest and most premium diesel fuel with 2x more Techron D that ensures a faster engine clean so that your vehicle can sustain maximum engine power.
